Rec Softball

Overview

WCWAA Softball is part of the CharMeck Softball organization. CharMeck is comprised of 11 softball organizations throughout the South Charlotte area.   Games can be played at any of these locations. Registration:

Registration opens on January 1 for the spring season and July 1 for the fall season.  Click the Register button below to see our currently open programs.

Age Groups & Information

6U

This age group is meant to be a basic introduction to softball. A 10” reduced compression ball is used. Teams may play with more than 10 players in the field. No scores or standings are kept.Once there are 3 outs recorded or 4 runs cross home plate, sides will be changed. The last inning each team will bat through their entire lineup. Batting order and fielding positions must be rotated each game to allow players to bat and field multiple positions. There must be a pitcher in the position during the entire game. Coaches will be limited to three pitches prior to the ball being placed upon the tee for the player to hit. The time limit for games is 1 hour and coaches will make safe/out calls. 6U will have a single Friday night practice and one game a week - either Friday night or Saturday morning.

8U

This age group is meant to be instructional; however, coaches should refrain from excessive instruction during a game. An 11” leather ball will be used.  Game time is 1 hour 15 minutes.  Once a kid pitcher registers four (4) balls on a batter, the coach of the batter comes in to deliver three (3) pitches. Balls and strikes do not carry forward from kid pitch to coach pitch. Batters can strike out during coach pitch.  8U will have 5:30 practices/6:00 games on Mondays and Wednesdays and rotating times on Saturday.

10U

This age group is player pitch and an 11” leather ball is used. Time limit for games is 6 innings or 1 hour 15 minutes.  Pitching distance is 35 feet. Stealing is allowed after the ball crosses the plate. 10U will have 5:30 practices/6:00 games on Tuesdays and Thursdays and rotating times on Saturday.

14U

This age groups uses a 12” leather ball.  The time limit for games is 7 innings or 1 hour 30 minutes. Pitching distance is 40 feet. 14U will have 7:00 practices/7:30 games on Tuesdays and Thursdays and rotating times on Saturday.

18U

This age group uses at 12” leather ball.  The time limit for games is 7 innings or 1 hour 30 minutes. 18U will have 7:00 practices/7:30 games on Mondays and Wednesdays and rotating times on Saturday.

Team Formation

All registered players must attend assessments prior to being placed on a team.  Players will be evaluated on hitting, throwing, fielding and running.  Coaches will then draft evenly matched teams based on assessment observations. Parents may request that their daughter play above their current age group if certain requirements are met.  Please contact the Board for more information.

Challenge Teams

WCWAA Softball will field a Challenge team in each age group (8U-18U) consisting of 10-12 players who are participating in the regular rec season.  Challenge teams will play in 2-3 Sunday tournaments throughout the season.  Tryout information is communicated each season via email.
